Community Service Officers are a uniformed, non-sworn extension of RCPD's patrol operations. Working directly in the field, CSOs handle lower-priority calls, assist sworn officers, and serve as an approachable presence in Redwood City's neighborhoods - building the community trust that policing depends on.

Together they process over 130,000 phone calls that come into the center annually and create about 88,000 calls for service.

The Communications Dispatchers use a variety of technology to process calls for service including a sophisticated phone, computer aided dispatch system and mapping software.

The current technology in use in the center allows us to answer traditional landlines, wireless and text to 9-1-1 calls. We are working closely with the State of California to prepare our system for a NextGen9-1-1 technology implementation. The Redwood City Dispatchers manage emergency and non-emergency requests from the community while they simultaneously provide support in a variety of ways to the patrol teams.

Education

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent

License or Certificate

  • Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong work ethic and a track record of reliability and successful performance
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with attention to detail

Community Service Officers wear a uniform and work directly in the field, extending RCPD's reach on lower-priority calls. CSOs are often the first step toward becoming a sworn officer and gain real field experience from day one.

  • Take reports for minor incidents and thefts
  • Assist sworn officers at scenes
  • Handle traffic control and parking enforcement
  • Conduct community outreach and non-contact welfare checks

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid California driver's license
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident authorized to work
  • Pass background investigation, polygraph, and medical exam
  • No felony convictions

Career Pathway
