Your Questions.

What are the minimum eligibility requirements?
  • 30 semester units of college credit (60 preferred)
  • Valid California driver's license
  • At least 21 years old at time of exam
  • PelletB score around 50+; NTN exam scores are not accepted
  • WSTB score of 348 and passing 1.5-mile run
  • U.S. Citizenship

College credits earned during the Academy do not count toward the minimum. No waivers are available for these standards.

Do you accept the NTN exam?
No. RCPD does not accept NTN exam scores.

Applicants should complete the PelletB and other required department testing steps instead of submitting NTN results.

What PelletB score do I need?
We do not have a strict minimum score for the PelletB - we evaluate candidates as a whole. However, we expect competitive scores around 50 or above.
Can I do a ride along?
Due to demand, ride alongs are currently available to applicants only. If you have an active application on file, use the contact form below or email rcpdrecruiting@redwoodcity.org and we will send you a ride along form to complete. If you haven't applied yet, use the contact form below or email rcpdrecruiting@redwoodcity.org if you have questions or would like to request a department tour.
Does RCPD sponsor the Police Academy?
Yes. As a Police Officer Trainee, RCPD registers and fully sponsors your Basic Police Academy. You earn up to $139,000/yr during training and transition directly to full Police Officer status upon graduation.
Can I apply from out of state?
Yes, out-of-state applicants are eligible, with a few important notes:
  • You must complete California testing (PelletB + WSTB) before applying
  • A CA driver's license is not required to apply, but is required before your hire date
  • Laterals: California does not offer reciprocity - you must complete an academy, modular program, or basic course waiver
  • The median home price in San Mateo County is ~$1.5M; many staff commute 30+ minutes

We're happy to provide more insight into the local environment — use the contact form below or email rcpdrecruiting@redwoodcity.org.

Is U.S. citizenship required?
Yes. U.S. citizenship is required prior to submitting an application. Work permits and non-citizen applications are not accepted at this time.
Can I use foreign college credits?
Foreign transcripts are not directly accepted. Your educational credit must be evaluated and accepted by an accredited U.S. institution. For guidance, refer to the U.S. Department of State - Global Community Liaison Office or the California POST College Credit Guide.
What Academies do you use?
RCPD works with several academy partners, including:
  • South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium
  • San Jose PD Academy
  • Alameda County SO Academy
  • Sacramento PD Academy
  • Contra Costa County SO Academy
Entry Level, Lateral, and Academy Graduate - which am I?
The right application depends on where you are in your law enforcement career:
  • Entry Level: You are not yet a sworn officer and need department sponsorship to attend a California basic academy.
  • Academy Graduate: You have graduated from a California police academy and have less than one year of patrol experience.
  • Lateral: You already have qualifying sworn California law enforcement experience and meet the lateral posting requirements.

If you are between categories, use the contact form below or email rcpdrecruiting@redwoodcity.org and we can help you apply to the best fit.

How do I start the application process?
