Earn Up to $139,000/yr. while in the Police Academy
Police Officer Trainees will be registered for the Basic Police Academy course to meet POST training mandates. Upon completion, they transition to Police Officer roles and enter the Field Training Program. The Redwood City Police Department emphasizes community policing and seeks candidates dedicated to providing excellent service with integrity and respect.
Education:
Completion of 30 semester units from an accredited college or university (60 units or more is preferred).

Possession of a valid California driver’s license maintaining a satisfactory driving record.

Entry Level Police Officer
Earn Up to $146,000/yr. *after six months of employment
The City of Redwood City is currently accepting applications for entry level Police Officer candidates who are either currently attending, have recently been accepted to, or have successfully graduated from an accredited California P.O.S.T. Academy, and have less than one year of sworn law enforcement experience.

Lateral police officer

To be considered for a Lateral Police Officer appointment, candidates must have:
Minimum of 12 months continuous experience as a sworn California law enforcement officer including successful completion of the employing agency probation period. Three or more years of experience is desirable.
Well-established record of distinguished service and have consistently demonstrated excellence in their assignments as law enforcement officers.
Communications Dispatcher
Earn Up to $61 an Hour
The Redwood City Police Department’s communications center has a staff of 11 Communications Dispatchers, 2 Lead Dispatchers, 5 Per-diem dispatchers and 1 Communications Supervisor. Together they process over 130,000 phone calls that come into the center annually and create about 88,000 calls for service. The Communications Dispatchers use a variety of technology to process calls for service including a sophisticated phone, computer aided dispatch system and mapping software.
The current technology in use in the center allows us to answer traditional landlines, wireless and text to 9-1-1 calls. We are working closely with the State of California to prepare our system for a NextGen9-1-1 technology implementation. The Redwood City Dispatchers manage emergency and non-emergency requests from the community while they simultaneously provide support in a variety of ways to the patrol teams.
Experience:
Must have three years of experience as a Public Safety Dispatcher
Education:
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
License or Certificate:
Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.

The Redwood City Police Department is an organization of professionals who are dedicated to providing the best police services possible. The Department is comprised of 96 sworn officers, 36 civilian employees, 4 reserve officers, and 25 volunteers who reflect the diverse communities they serve.

The Redwood City Police Department is overseen by Chief of Police, Kristina Bell, who was appointed in 2023. The Department is divided into three organizational divisions, including the Patrol Division, the Investigations Division, and the Support Services Division.
